Related to the Christian religious songs of African Americans, Gospel music comes from “goodspell” in Old English. Many musical instruments can be found in Gospel churches: organ, harmonium, stringed instruments, but also everything that allows to make sounds with the body: clapping, singing and body movements. Gospel services celebrate the word of God and his apostles with joy, rhythm and music.

The First Corinthian Baptist Church is a huge church located in a former movie theater and welcomes several hundred people every weekend. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the gospel songs very energetic. Every Sunday, three services are offered, at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30. We advise you to arrive at least half an hour before the service. The stage is shared between singers, musicians and a particularly charismatic preacher.

We attended the mass in Harlem at First Corinthian Baptist Church on April 8, 2018.
