San Diego’s green lung since 1868, Balboa Park is home not only to the San Diego Zoo, but also to numerous museums, architecturally stunning buildings and wonderful gardens. You can spend hours wandering through this park, made safer in the 1990s thanks to video surveillance and an increased police presence. Balboa Park was originally called City Park, but was renamed in 1915 in tribute to Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a Spanish conquistador who first led his crew to the Pacific coast in 1513.
