Between the years 1901 and 1927, Val-Jalbert vibrated happily to the rhythm of its pulp mill. In 1901, when the mill was built by Damase Jalbert, the village was called “Ouiatchouan”, named after the waterfall that fed the mill to make wood pulp. Although the history of Val-Jalbert ended in 1927 with the closing of the pulp mill, it has become a must-see tourist destination in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean. It is indeed a true open-air museum.
The visit is done on foot or by shuttle: with an audio-video guide, you enter another era. Everywhere on the site, you will understand and feel this unique period. In high season, the tour is punctuated by multiple theatrical animations featuring typical characters of the old village in a period setting. You will enter the intimacy of a family residence, attend a class with children, speak with the mayor, etc.
