Located in the heart of the Central American isthmus, Costa Rica is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the east by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The population, which is mainly of European origin, amounts to 4.9 million inhabitants. Although Costa Rica covers only 0.03% of the planet’s surface, no other country in the world has such biodiversity. Indeed, 6% of all animal and plant species found on earth can be found here! This includes 850 species of birds, 12,000 types of plants including 1,400 orchids, 1,600 types of fish, 230 types of mammals and thousands of species of butterflies. Among the animals, it is difficult not to fall under the charm of the facetious character of certain monkeys, the superb fur of the ocelot, the incredible iridescent colors of the hummingbirds, the irresistible smile of the sloths or the sumptuous finery of the resplendent quetzal.
For more than half a century, this tropical paradise has done everything possible to preserve its natural treasure. So much so that today, national parks and biological, forest and animal reserves, whether public or private, cover more than a quarter of Costa Rica’s territory! Since the 1970s, Costa Rica has been a pioneer in ecotourism. This concept, encouraged by the authorities, has really made tourism take off. And today, among the tourists who discover the country (most of them coming from North America and Europe), a growing number is seduced by a more environmentally friendly accommodation. Finally, always with a view to protecting nature, Costa Rica has even set itself the ambitious challenge of becoming, by 2021, the first carbon-neutral economy on the planet!
