A Southeast Asian country that opens onto the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia is gradually converting to tourism, sparingly revealing its many riches. The “8th wonder of the world” is no stranger to the general public, but the temples of Angkor, which have withstood fighting, looting and the passage of time, have yet to reveal all their secrets. In 2015, no fewer than 2 million tourists visited the main temples, Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, leaving the initiated to marvel at the discovery of certain mysterious temples, such as Beng Meala, hidden deep in the jungle and imprisoned by strangling fig trees. Cambodia is also its bustling capital, Phnom Penh, where modernity is trying to assert itself in the face of the deeply-rooted past of this very religious people.
Focused on agriculture and fishing, which employ 70% of the population, the country is also developing a number of commercial crops: rubber in the Kompong Cham region, pepper in the eastern coastal zone, and coconut and fruit plantations around the towns. Bordered by the Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake, the largest body of freshwater in Southeast Asia, Cambodia has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. From the paradisiacal island of Koh Rong, renowned for its dream beaches, turquoise waters and festive atmosphere, to its provincial towns with their languid charm, via its mountainous regions in the east and west, Cambodia presents a thousand and one faces to its visitors, but always with an ineffaceable smile.
