Java the sweet, is unlike any other country in the world. Heir to an art and history that intrude into the supernatural, like its temples (Borobudur, Prambanan…) conceived as microcosms, this island shines through in a landscape of rice paddies dominated by a hundred volcanic cones, as much benefactors as destroyers.
Active volcanoes, lunar landscapes, Dantesque human activities and extraordinary flora and fauna are all on display every day, and you’ll experience the power of nature at the foot of the Merapi volcano, the most active, the Bromo volcano, one of the most aesthetically pleasing, and in the crater of the Kawah Ijen, the most sulfurous! Superb tea plantations in the western part of the island and luxuriant forests covering the slopes of its volcanoes; the magnificence of Yogyakarta, a veritable cultural capital, dominated by the intriguing Merapi volcano; the lunar landscapes of the very aesthetic volcanoes in the east; heavenly beaches… These are the main landscapes on offer on the island of Java.
Unlike Bali, which is predominantly Hindu, Java, like all the Indonesian islands, is Muslim. Likewise, Java is much less touristy, and you’ll enjoy greater immersion with locals who are sometimes surprised, but often happy to welcome tourists as they are a godsend for significantly improving their standard of living. The culture and open-mindedness of the Javanese make this island an excellent place to get to know the country. Community-based tourism, initiated by young Javanese, allows visitors to share in the daily life of the island’s inhabitants.
