Renowned for its exceptional, colorful, thatched-roof, triangular stone houses known as palheiros, Santana is a small village in the north of Madeira. Dating back to the 16th century, most of these little houses have been preserved to attract tourists. One of the biggest festivals of traditional folklore is held in Santana every July. Numerous folk groups are invited to take part, not only from Madeira, but also from other regions and countries.
Santana’s surroundings are also well worth a visit. The Queimadas Forest Park, located high above Santana, offers many hiking trails. The Laurissilva forest you’ll be passing through offers some magnificent scenery. Take time to admire this incredible biodiversity as you hike along the famous levadas.
