Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum (or Tropical Museum) showcases cultures from 4 corners of the globe. From Southeast Asia to Africa, India and Latin America, you’ll discover the rituals of today and yesteryear, festivals and decorations… The museum presents permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Housed in a large early 20th-century building, once the headquarters of the Dutch Colonial Institute, the museum presents an impressive collection on the theme of former colonies, including Indonesia, but from an open, modern perspective. Development issues in Third World countries are addressed, as are recent ethnological discoveries.
The Tropenmuseum is located right at the entrance to the parc Oosterpark, a stone’s throw from Amsterdam’s trendy bars and cafés. A little away from the crowded tourist areas, a visit to this corner is rather peaceful.
The Tropenmuseum visit was made on June 8, 2013.
