Photos of Amsterdam, the “Venice of the North”

Capital of tolerance and diversity

From its canals and world-famous museums to its many sights and historical treasures, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most romantic and surprising capitals. It’s not easy to change sidewalks here: you have to go around the water to find a bridge further on. But don’t worry, there are more than 1,200 bridges to help you change banks. No shutters, no bars on the windows, nothing is hidden. Even some of the ladies don’t hesitate to show off their skivvies behind the windows of the Red Light district.

In the Venice of the North, the weather changes as quickly as the Amstel’s hues, clear skies give way to mist, and storms arrive without a word. A city of whims and contrasts, at once modern and classic, wise and wild, conservative and innovative, it will captivate any visitor who takes the trouble to really discover it, beyond the clichés. One might almost think of Amsterdam as a museum city, given its sheer number, flamboyance and renown, but Amsterdam is a city to be discovered from the inside, at the bend in an alleyway or in a small coffee-shop, where life takes on its full meaning, where the heart of the Amstellodammers truly beats.
