Photos of Lisbon, the city of 7 hills

A warm-hearted capital, heir to a great empire

Lisbon, or “Lisa” as its inhabitants call it, is a city of unconventional beauty. Its tag-scarred pastel houses and unbridled nightlife are reminiscent of Havana; its blue waters, streetcars and bridge are reminiscent of San Francisco; its chic boutiques and rehabilitated docks are reminiscent of London, while the Alfama has an air of a North African medina. Lisbon is a city of many facets, not only astonishing visitors with the dazzling beauty of its castles, palaces, monasteries and churches, but also delighting their taste buds with culinary specialties such as pasteis!

Lisbon is much more than that, and it owes much of this to its inhabitants, the Lisboners, who are warm and welcoming, and imbued with a gentle way of life not unlike that of the climate. Lisbon is also a city to live in, with its pubs and bars at nightfall, where every district comes alive in a farandole of colors and music, with fado as the highlight. There’s a place for everyone in Lisbon, whether for a few days or… a lifetime!
