The parc Gustav Vigeland is Oslo’s largest park and the world’s largest sculpture park created by a single artist. It features 212 stone and bronze sculptures presenting humanity in all its aspects. Vigeland not only created all the sculptures, he also designed the park, including the garden architecture, bridges, fountains and enclosure.
The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and admission is free. From the “Angry Child” to the imposing “Monolith”, the life-size statues are a pleasure to discover in summer and winter alike. The “Monolith” is a single-block granite sculpture of 121 interlocking figures, rising to a height of 17 metres. The main theme of Gustav Vigeland’s work is the passage from childhood to adulthood, destiny. There are many nude sculptures of children, men and women, frozen in their daily lives, which sometimes makes for somewhat strange contemplation.
The visit to Vigeland Park was made on December 25, 2018.
