Founded in 1421, Funchal is Madeira’s largest city, home to 37% of the population. Funchal is all about the good life, with its small restaurants, market, seafront, intoxicating gardens and numerous churches. The long avenue along the ocean, lined with palm trees and dotted with colorful, fragrant flowers, will take you from one end of town to the other. Afterwards, don’t hesitate to lose yourself in the streets that climb the hills to gain height and discover all those houses clinging to the slope.
The town hall square (Praça do municipio) is Funchal’s focal point, featuring a mosaic floor of grey balsate and white marble and a central fountain. From the Sé cathedral to the fortress of São Tiago, not forgetting the Monte Palace tropical garden reached by cable car, everything in Funchal is harmonious and colorful. Don’t miss the famous wicker sled attraction, where you’ll hurtle down the slope at nearly 40 km/h. Thrills guaranteed! A number of parks are available for a refreshing break.
The visit to Funchal was made in August 2018.
