Designed by architect P.J.H. Cuypers and built in 1876, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum is the largest museum in the Netherlands. Its collection includes many of the country’s most famous works, including Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” and works by Vermeer and Frans Hals.
The Rijksmuseum’s collection goes beyond the Dutch masters. It covers the rich cultural history of the Netherlands through diverse objects such as ship models, sculptures, archaeological finds, clothing, weapons, prints, photographs and more. Thousands of objects from the past offer an impressive visual account of Dutch history in a global context, also tracing Amsterdam’s 800-year history from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Whether you’re in Amsterdam for a few days or longer, a visit to the Rijksmuseum is a must. To avoid queues, it’s best to arrive early. And why not follow up with Amsterdam’s other major art museum, located nearby: the Van Gogh Museum?
