The adventurous spirit of James Deering, heir to a wealthy family that made its fortune in agricultural equipment, lives on in the estate of Vizcaya, a veritable European haven nestled in Miami’s tropical vegetation. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, the villa and its lush gardens invite you on an unforgettable journey through history and art.
Upon entering, visitors are charmed by the tea room with its marble floors and stained-glass doors. The breakfast room, decorated with Chinese ceramics and Neapolitan seascapes, evokes the spirit of exploration. The Cathay Room, meanwhile, recalls the splendors of Hollywood’s golden age.
Spanning 10 hectares, the Vizcaya gardens rival those of Versailles. Geometric paths lined with pruned shrubs, classical statues and majestic columns create a typically European atmosphere. Tropical touches, such as palm trees and rare orchids, add an exotic note to the whole.
Vizcaya is more than just a house or garden, it’s a truly immersive experience. Through its walls and walkways, you find yourself transported to another era, discovering the artistic and architectural treasures of Europe and the tropical magic of Miami.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens were visited on March 10, 2020.
